Book Clubs

I have been running student book clubs for almost 15 years. It started as a way to keep busy and make a little bit of money during the summer, but it really took off when the same group of students stuck with it year after year.

My book clubs range from 3rd grade to 9th grade. My format is simple: We meet once a week over five weeks, for an hour each time. I divide the book into five sections, and we read a section per week. Students prepare for the meeting by having read the assigned section. Depending on the age group, we either have activities to do that go along with the book, or we simply have a fantastic hour-long discussion.

Some of the books that my book clubs have read are: Anna Hibiscus, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, When You Reach Me, Into Thin Air, Fahrenheit 451, The Westing Game, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Under the Egg, Treasure Island, Watership Down, Little Fires Everywhere, Five Feet Apart, No Fixed Address, The House of the Scorpion, The Parker Inheritance, The List, The Cricket in Times Square, The Phantom Tollbooth, Chains, Melissa’s Story, Rick, Alice Austen Lived Here, How to Survive Your Murder, We Deserve Monuments, Speak, The Alchemyst, Last Night at the Telegraph Club, We Dream of Space, and the Nevermoor Books (1 and 2).

The cost of the book club is $125/student for the five meetings. A book club must have a minimum of five students. If you have five students who are interested in doing a book club with me, let me know!
